The Regional Assembly consists of 149 directly elected members. The members are elected on party lists with a proportional system.
At the last election in 2010, the following parties were elected to the Regional Assembly:
- Moderate Party (EPP) 48 seats
- Social Democratic Party (PES) 47seats
- Sweden Democrats (non-affiliated) 14 seats
- Liberal Party (ELDR) 12 seats
- Green Party (EGP) 10 seats
- Centre Party (ELDR) 7 seats
- Left Party (NGLA) 6 seats
- Christian Democrats (EPP) 5 seats
A majority coalition of the Moderate Party, Liberal Party, Centre Party, Christian Democrats and Green Party forms the regional leadership.
The next election to the Regional Assembly will be held in September 2014.

- PES = Party of European Socialists
- EPP = European People’s Party
- ELDR = European Liberals, Democrats and Reformists
- EGP = European Green Party
- NGLA = Nordic Green Left Alliance
