The MEDIM study

Principal Investigator: Louise Bennet

The aim of the MEDIM (Impact of Migration and Ethnicity on Diabetes In Malmö) study is to identify risk factors that affect the development of type 2 diabetes in the largest immigrant group in Malmö (the city in which the CPF is based): those born in Iraq.

A health survey consisting of an interview regarding lifestyle habits, a physical examination and an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) has recently been completed. Over 2000 individuals participated in the survey and analysis of the data is ongoing.

In the next stage of the MEDIM study, we plan to develop a culturally adapted lifestyle intervention program targeting Iraqi-born individuals at high risk of type 2 diabetes. This intervention program, which aims to support lifestyle changes that reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, will be tested in a randomized controlled study in primary care.
